My name is Margaret Stott
and I am @%?!& years
old. I have two children, the oldest of which is grown
and married and has given me two beautiful grandchildren.
The youngest is in college hence the need for the birth
of THE JEANS LADY business. (He needs food money!) My husband
is great and loves me a lot better than I deserve.
I have
been sewing almost my entire life, which if you knew what
@%?!& stood for you would know that it’s
a very, VERY, long time. In fact I can remember trying
to sew with a needle and thread when I was only four years
old. I know that’s how old I was because we moved
away from the house in which I have this memory right before
my fifth birthday. So, what was I doing playing with a
very sharp instrument when I was only four years old? I
don’t know, you’ll have to ask my mom. But
I CAN say that all the members of my family were very much “do
it, fix it, make it yourself” kind of people…and
they still are.
Nevertheless, I survived and I am happy to be alive and
well on planet earth.
The next time I remember trying to sew was Christmas when
I was 8 years old. Mom and Dad--I mean--Santa Claus (don’t
want to spoil it for anyone) gave me a toy sewing machine
for Christmas and I was trying to make doll clothes. I
remember getting really frustrated because it was one of
those kinds of toy machines that didn’t have a bobbin
thread and if you pulled what seemed to be a loose thread,
the whole thing would unravel. I also remember having flashes
in my mind of me throwing the dinky thing right out the
window.
Later, Mom confessed she had bought me--I mean--she
had suggested to Santa that he give me the toy machine
because she didn’t want me using her REAL sewing
machine. By the summer of the next year (I was about 10),
she relented and let me sew on her portable Singer. It
was the summer after my little sister was born that I clearly
remember making little baby dresses for her. Mom pinned
the pieces together and let me sew the seams.
A few years
ago, after having been a stay-at-home mom for about 15
years, we moved from the country into Bryan (I know that’s a little backward--most people, as
they get older, move from the city to the country.) I decided
it was time to go back to work. I applied for various office
jobs but no luck. Finally, a friend at church told me about
a job at a monogram shop.
I didn’t get to run the
monogram machines but I did get to sew on a commercial
machine. Sewing on that Pfaff 118 was like driving a Ferrari!
Later, a friend asked me if I wanted to take over for her
hemming jeans at a store in the Mall and that‘s
where I learned how to do the secret
mathematical calculations.
There are some things that are important to me. Family,
for one, but even more important than that is my relationship
with Jesus. I know it sounds corny to some people and if
that’s you, it’s okay, I don’t mind.
The last thing I want to do is try to force something on
somebody. But if you are curious about such things, I’d
be happy to talk to you about it.
My favorite thing to do
is get together with other believers (as we call ourselves
these days) and pray and talk about stuff. I would rather
go to church or a prayer meeting than go to a movie--usually.
I’m not perfect for sure. I do love
God and what’s more important and
amazing, He really loves me.
One more thing...if you are
new in town and are looking for a good church, I’d
like to recommend the one I go to. It’s called LifeChurch
and is located in the Tejas Center behind Joann’s
Fabrics. Here’s
a link if you’re interested. Maybe I’ll
see you there.
